The key is organization: no trains to find, no connections, no ticket queues. Just you, a dedicated driver, and an itinerary calibrated to the minute.
The route is entirely on motorway (A1 from Rome towards Naples, then A3 Naples–Pompeii): no driving through Rome, no unpredictable city traffic, total distance roughly 230 km from Civitavecchia to Pompeii.
With a port call of at least 10 hours (standard for large Mediterranean cruise itineraries), the combination is fully achievable. For shorter calls, we'll help you decide which destination to prioritize.
Typical day schedule:
| Time | Stop | |------|------| | 07:30 | Depart from Civitavecchia cruise port | | 10:00 | Arrive Naples — historic centre | | 10:00–12:00 | Visit Naples: Spaccanapoli, pizza, Castel dell'Ovo | | 12:15 | Drive from Naples to Pompeii (40 minutes) | | 13:00–16:00 | Visit the Pompeii Excavations | | 16:15 | Depart Pompeii towards Civitavecchia | | 18:30 | Return to port — 45 minutes before re-embarkation |
The logic is simple but effective:
- Naples at 10:00 catches the city before it fully wakes up. Less traffic, markets just opening, bakeries still warm.
- Pompeii after 13:00 means fewer tourists compared to the morning peak of organized tours, and ideal afternoon light for photography.
- The Naples–Pompeii drive (A3, about 40 minutes) is short and predictable.
Your driver knows both cities in detail and can suggest real-time variations based on your port call times and preferences.
Spaccanapoli — the street that cuts the historic centre in two: markets, Gesù Nuovo church, San Gregorio Armeno (the nativity scene alley). Naples' energy is all here.
Pizza, eaten standing — a stop at the counter of a historic pizzeria is mandatory. Da Sorbillo, Di Matteo, or a less touristy spot suggested by your driver: real Neapolitan pizza is eaten in 10 minutes and costs €3–5.
Castel dell'Ovo — if ports fascinate you, this waterfront castle offers a spectacular view over the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. Free entry, 15-minute visit.
Spanish Quarter — a labyrinth of alleys with laundry between buildings, Maradona murals, fry shops and bazaars. Naples' popular soul in pure form.
Tip: decide in advance what interests you most — art, food, or architecture — and let the driver know. In 2 hours, it's better to explore one area deeply than to skim all four.
Forum — the political heart of Pompeii. The columns of Jupiter's Temple with Vesuvius in the background is one of the most photographed images in the world.
Forum Baths — perfectly preserved, they show how Romans managed daily social life. Changing rooms, caldarium, frigidarium.
Via dell'Abbondanza — the main commercial street, lined with taverns, private baths and houses with frescoes still readable on the walls.
House of the Vettii — home of two wealthy merchants, with erotic frescoes and mythological scenes among the best preserved in the entire site.
Amphitheatre — the oldest stone amphitheatre in the world (80 BC). Still structurally intact, its size is striking.
Plaster casts of victims — the most intense experience. The plaster casts in the voids left by bodies in the ash convey a human presence impossible to forget.
Tickets: buy in advance at pompeiisites.org (€17–20/adult). In high season, queues at the entrance regularly exceed 60 minutes. We'll send you the link upon booking confirmation.

Can you really do Naples AND Pompeii in one day? Yes, with a port call of at least 10 hours. Departure at 7:30, return by 18:30, 45-minute buffer before re-embarkation.
Better to start with Naples or Pompeii? We recommend Naples in the morning (less heat, fewer crowds at the ruins) and Pompeii in the afternoon. But we adapt to your preferences.
