Book Civitavecchia–Florence Transfer

Compared to Rome, Florence offers a different experience: more compact dimensions (the entire centre is walkable), a coherent Renaissance atmosphere, and the opportunity to see Michelangelo's David, the Uffizi Gallery and Brunelleschi's Dome within a few hours without getting lost.

The private car transfer on the Autostrada del Sole (A1) motorway is the only solution that guarantees fixed arrival times in the morning and a safe return to the ship before evening boarding.

Your driver departs from Civitavecchia port at 07:00–07:30 to guarantee arrival in Florence by 10:00–10:30. The critical stretch is leaving Rome northbound (A1 motorway — GRA area), which on weekday mornings can add 20–30 minutes. The motorway from north Rome to Florence is generally clear.

Return: To meet an 17:30–18:00 boarding time, departure from Florence must be by 14:30–15:00. The driver will remind you in advance of the return time.

Morning (10:00–13:00)

  • Piazza del Duomo: the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto's Bell Tower and the Baptistery of San Giovanni occupy an entire square that is worth the trip on its own. Brunelleschi's dome (booking required to climb) is Florence's symbol. Even just the exterior deserves 30–45 minutes.
  • Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi Loggia: the open-air piazza with Palazzo Vecchio, the Neptune Fountain and original (or replica) sculptures is free and highly photogenic. The Uffizi Gallery (Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael) requires an online booking — without one, queues are 1–2 hours.

Afternoon (13:00–14:30)

  • Ponte Vecchio: the medieval bridge lined with goldsmiths' shops is a 5-minute walk from Piazza della Signoria. A short but iconic stroll.
  • Lunch: one of the restaurants in Oltrarno (less touristy, more authentic) or a lampredotto street sandwich at the market.

Museums: choose ONE

For a single day, choose between:

  • Uffizi Gallery: Renaissance art (Botticelli, Titian, Raphael, Michelangelo). Allow 2 hours.
  • Galleria dell'Accademia: Michelangelo's David and the unfinished Pietàs. Allow 1h30.
  • Palazzo Pitti + Boboli Gardens: a less crowded option with panoramic views of the city from the gardens.

Do not try to fit Uffizi + Accademia in the same day — queues and timing make it impossible with a fixed return deadline.

For a group of 3–4 people, the NCC costs the same as or less than the train (return tickets, 4 Frecciarossa fares), with zero logistical stress. The schedule certainty is what matters most: with a cruise you cannot afford a train delay.

| Time | Activity | |---|---| | 07:00 | Depart Civitavecchia port | | 09:45–10:00 | Arrive Florence, drop-off at Piazza Duomo | | 10:00–11:00 | Piazza del Duomo — exterior, Baptistery, photos | | 11:00–13:00 | Uffizi Gallery (with pre-booking) | | 13:00–13:45 | Piazza della Signoria, walk to Ponte Vecchio | | 13:45–14:15 | Ponte Vecchio and Oltrarno — quick lunch | | 14:30 | Depart Florence back to Civitavecchia | | 17:15–17:30 | Arrive Civitavecchia port |

Variant: Galleria dell'Accademia instead of Uffizi Replace 11:00–13:00 with the Accademia (1h30) + walk in the northern centre (San Marco, Santissima Annunziata).

Pre-trip bookings recommended:

  • Uffizi tickets: uffizi.it (book 2–3 weeks ahead in high season)
  • Accademia tickets: galleriaaccademiafirenze.it
  • Brunelleschi dome climb: duomo.firenze.it (sells out weeks in advance)

Price includes:

  • Dedicated driver for the entire day (departure + waiting in Florence + return)
  • Motorway tolls both ways
  • Luggage stored in vehicle during visit
  • ZTL Florence access for drop-off/pickup in the historic centre
  • Schedule flexibility agreed with the driver

Comparison with the ship's organised excursion: Official cruise excursions to Florence typically cost €120–180 per person (€480–720 for 4) with a shared coach of 40–50 people, a rigid departure time and an early return. The NCC at €450 for 4 passengers is cheaper, with a private vehicle and custom timing.

Frequently asked questions

Civitavecchia to Florence is approximately 290 km, all on the A1 motorway. Under normal conditions the drive takes 2h30–2h45. Morning traffic leaving Rome (GRA ring road onto the A1) can add 20–30 minutes. Your driver departs from the ship on time to guarantee arrival in Florence by 10:00–10:30.

The round-trip private NCC transfer from Civitavecchia to Florence costs €450 for the luxury sedan (up to 4 passengers) and €550 for the luxury van (up to 7 passengers). The price is fixed and includes the full day with driver waiting in Florence, motorway tolls and luggage. No surcharges for the evening return.

Yes, but it's complicated. From Civitavecchia you must first take a regional train to Roma Termini (about 1 hour), then a Frecciarossa or Intercity to Florence Santa Maria Novella (about 1h30). That's 2h30–3h one way, with one connection, luggage management across stations and the risk of delays. For a cruise passenger with a fixed evening boarding time, the train is a risky choice.

With 5–6 hours in Florence you can see: the Duomo and Baptistery (exterior, 30 min), Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio (30 min), Ponte Vecchio (15 min), and either the Uffizi or the Accademia — not both. Book museums in advance: without a booking queues take 1–2 hours. Your driver drops you at Piazza Duomo and waits in an agreed parking area near the centre.

Yes. NCC vehicles have ZTL authorisation and can access the historic centre for drop-off and pick-up. This is one of the key advantages over a taxi or self-drive rental: you are dropped directly at Piazza Duomo or near the Uffizi, without having to stop at the ZTL boundary.
