Book Herculaneum+Vesuvius Excursion

The differences are substantial:

| Aspect | Pompeii | Herculaneum | |---|---|---| | Excavation area | 44 hectares | 4 hectares | | Preservation | Ash — bones, stone, ceramics | Pyroclastic mud — also wood, textiles, food | | Visitors/day | 15,000–25,000 | 2,000–4,000 | | Visit time | 4–5 hours | 2 hours | | Distance from Civitavecchia | 230 km | 240 km | | Combinable with Vesuvius? | Difficult in one day | Yes, perfectly |

Herculaneum was buried by a pyroclastic mudflow — not just ash like Pompeii. This process preserved organic materials that decomposed elsewhere: wooden beams still in position, beds, wardrobes, carbonized food, even the port docks with boats still moored. It's a smaller site but paradoxically richer in detail.

Decumanus Maximus — the main street, perfectly paved. On the sides, shops with still-legible commercial signs, marble counters, taverns with amphorae.

House of the Bicentenary — one of Herculaneum's richest private homes. On the second floor, a wooden cast still in position on the wall has led scholars to suggest the presence of a Christian cross — which would make this the earliest evidence of Christian worship in the empire.

Suburban Baths — outside the town centre, they're better preserved than any other Roman bath structure in the world. The erotic frescoes in the changing rooms and the intact marble pool are extraordinary.

Boat warehouses with skeletons — Herculaneum's most striking detail. The warehouses along the former coastline contained the bodies of about 300 people trying to flee by sea. The skeleton of a slave still wearing the master's rings, a mother with her child — scenes from 79 AD still there.

Tickets: €13/adult at ercolano.beniculturali.it. The combined Herculaneum+Vesuvius ticket (€30) is good value if you visit both on the same day.

How the climb works:

  • Driver takes you to the car park at 1,000 metres (private road with toll ~€3)
  • From there, walk 800 metres uphill on a black lapilli path
  • Walking time: 30 minutes up + 20 minutes down
  • At the crater rim (1,281 m): fumaroles, sulphurous vapours, and a 360° panorama over the Bay of Naples, the Sorrento Peninsula, Capri, Ischia
  • Crater path entry fee: €10/adult

What to bring: closed shoes with non-slip soles (lapilli can be unstable), water, light jacket even in summer (temperature at the crater is 5–8°C lower than at the base).

| Time | Stop | |------|------| | 07:30 | Depart from Civitavecchia cruise port | | 10:00 | Arrive at Herculaneum Excavations | | 10:00–12:00 | Visit Herculaneum (2 hours) | | 12:30 | Arrive at Vesuvius car park (1,000 m) | | 12:30–14:30 | Crater climb, visit, descent (2 hours total) | | 15:00 | Quick lunch at the base or in the car | | 15:30 | Depart towards Civitavecchia | | 18:00 | Return to port — 45 min before re-embarkation |

Variant with Pompeii (11h+ port call): After Herculaneum and Vesuvius, a brief Pompeii visit (Forum and Baths, 1 hour) to compare the two sites. Depart 7:00, return by 18:30.

With My Rome Driver the vehicle is exclusively yours, timing is flexible, and return to port is always guaranteed with a 45-minute buffer.

For the complete guide to Civitavecchia cruise port with terminal times and practical tips, read our dedicated article.

Included: dedicated driver, return motorway transfer, waiting throughout visit, Vesuvius road toll, schedule monitoring, guaranteed return to port, water on board. Not included: Herculaneum ticket (~€13), Vesuvius crater path fee (~€10), lunch, gratuities.

Main difference between Herculaneum and Pompeii? Herculaneum is smaller (2-hour visit vs 4–5) but more detailed: pyroclastic mud preserved organic materials (wood, textiles, food) that Pompeii's ash destroyed.

Is the Vesuvius climb hard? No. Drive to 1,000 m, walk 30 minutes on path to crater. Closed shoes mandatory.

What if the crater is closed due to weather? We adapt with an alternative stop: Naples city, more time at Herculaneum, or Torre del Greco.

Can we do Herculaneum + Pompeii same day? Yes, with 11h+ port call. Depart 7:00, return by 18:30.

Frequently asked questions

About 2 hours 30 minutes via the A1 and A3 motorways. Herculaneum is just outside Naples, reachable 20 minutes beyond the city.

Herculaneum was buried by a pyroclastic mudflow (not just ash) that preserved wood, textiles and organic materials otherwise lost. The excavations are much more compact and readable than Pompeii, with less than 1/3 of the surface to cover.

You drive to the car park at 1,000 metres altitude. From there it's a 30-minute walk on a lapilli path to the crater rim (1,281 m). It's a moderate hike, no mountaineering equipment needed. Closed shoes are mandatory.

Yes, with an 11+ hour port call. Herculaneum takes 2 hours, then Vesuvius (1h30), then optionally a brief Pompeii visit (1h30). The driver optimizes timing.

In severe weather, the crater path may be closed by authorities. In that case we adapt the itinerary with an alternative stop (Naples, Torre del Greco, more time at Herculaneum).
