Ciampino is approximately 15 km from Rome city centre — closer than Fiumicino (30 km), but the route passes through busier areas: Via Appia Nuova, Via Tuscolana and the ring road. During peak hours the distance advantage disappears. If your flight lands at Fiumicino instead, see the complete guide to all transport options from Fiumicino to Rome: train, bus, taxi and NCC compared.
Unlike Fiumicino, Ciampino is a small airport with a basic layout: arrivals exit, car parks, bus stop. There is no direct metro link — every route to Rome requires at least one change or a private vehicle.
How it works:
- Outside the arrivals exit, board one of the shuttle buses operating towards Rome
- The main operators are Terravision, SIT Bus Shuttle and Atral Cotral
- Buses arrive at Roma Termini (Terravision/SIT) or the Anagnina metro stop (Cotral/Atral)
- From Anagnina, take Metro A towards the centre (Termini, Spagna, Ottaviano)
Costs:
- Terravision/SIT: approximately €6–8 per person (bookable online)
- Cotral to Anagnina: approximately €1.20 (then €1.50 for the metro)
Journey times:
- Bus to Termini: 40–60 minutes
- Bus to Anagnina + metro: 50–70 minutes total
When it makes sense: For solo travellers with hand luggage only who are not in a hurry. Not recommended with large trolley cases, young children, or late at night when buses are infrequent.
What the fixed taxi fare includes:
- Journey to any address within the ring road
- Up to 2 standard large pieces of luggage
What is NOT included or changes the price:
- Destinations outside the ring road (Prati di Capretta, peripheral EUR, Ostia): metered fare
- Extra luggage: possible supplement
- Night hours (22:00–07:00): night supplement applies
- More than 4 passengers: not possible in a standard taxi
Where to find a taxi: Arrivals exit, official taxi rank. The queue can be long when multiple flights land simultaneously.
What the €60 NCC transfer includes:
- Pick-up with name board at the arrivals exit — no need to search for your vehicle
- Real-time flight monitoring — the driver already knows if you are delayed
- Unlimited luggage within vehicle capacity (3 large trolleys + hand luggage)
- Drop-off at any address in Rome and surroundings — not only within the ring road
- Free waiting up to 60 minutes from the landing time
- Dedicated vehicle — you do not share with other passengers
Fares:
| Vehicle | Passengers | Fixed price | |---|---|---| | luxury sedan saloon | up to 4 pax | €60 | | luxury van | up to 7 pax | €70 |
For families of 3–4, the €60 NCC often costs the same as a taxi but with far more service. For groups of 5–7, the €70 NCC is the only option that resolves everything in a single vehicle.
Practical rule:
- Solo with a backpack → shuttle bus, cheap and works well
- Couple with luggage → fixed taxi is the balanced choice
- Family or group → NCC at €60 or €70 flat, no surprises
- Outside bus hours (night / early morning) → NCC is the only reliable alternative to a taxi
- Hotel outside the ring road → NCC essential (fixed taxi does not apply)
There is no direct public transport between these points. The options are:
- Ciampino → Civitavecchia (port): approximately 65 km via ring road and A12. NCC transfer €130 fixed, approximately 1 hour 10 minutes
- Ciampino → Fiumicino (airport): approximately 45 km via ring road. NCC transfer €80 fixed, approximately 50 minutes. Once at Fiumicino, read the FCO terminals guide: where the NCC driver waits (T1, T2, T3) to find the correct meeting point straight away
In both cases the NCC transfer is the only practical solution: there is no direct train or bus connection between these three points without going through central Rome.
