Book Driver for 1 May

The Concertone at Piazza San Giovanni is the symbolic 1 May event in Italy: hundreds of thousands of people converge on the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano over the course of a day that starts in mid-afternoon and often ends well past midnight. It is not a normal concert — it is a massive occupation of one of the city's busiest quadrants.

The result? A logistical picture that challenges even the most experienced Romans:

  • Piazza San Giovanni and the surrounding streets are closed to traffic from the morning of 1 May
  • Traffic is diverted onto already congested alternative routes (Via Appia, Via Tuscolana, Circonvallazione Appia), creating queues from early afternoon
  • Metro Line A, San Giovanni and Manzoni stations: overcrowded or access-controlled in the evening peak
  • Buses and trams: holiday schedule with reduced frequencies, packed from the middle of the day
  • Taxis: impossible to find between 22:00 and 01:00, when tens of thousands of people leave Piazza San Giovanni simultaneously

For those arriving from abroad — or for anyone who simply wants to enjoy the day without stress — a private driver in Rome on 1 May is the difference between a memorable experience and a day spent chasing transport.

The combination to keep in mind:

Historic Centre ZTL: active with standard holiday hours. Anyone entering without authorisation risks an automatic fine from the electronic access points.

San Giovanni area: progressively off-limits to private vehicles during Concertone hours. The closure extends along Via Merulana, Via Labicana and the surrounding side streets.

Diverted traffic: alternative routes around the event perimeter are congested. Getting there by car from EUR, Prati or the historic centre can take twice the normal time.

The evening return: the most critical moment. Between 23:00 and 01:00, tens of thousands of people simultaneously look for a way home or to their hotel. Taxis are scarce, ride-hailing apps show long waits, the metro is packed.

An authorised NCC driver knows the permitted access points, the closest drop-off spots to the square and — crucially — shows up punctually at the agreed evening pick-up time because the time was agreed in advance, not left to chance.

Morning (before the Concertone)

  • Historic centre with less traffic: Colosseum, Imperial Fora, Trastevere — reachable with the driver dropping you at the most convenient points
  • Visit to the Vatican Museums or Galleria Borghese (online booking recommended)
  • Walk at the Pincio and Villa Borghese — green space, no parking worries

Afternoon

  • Approach Piazza San Giovanni for the Concertone (usually starts from 15:00): the driver drops you at the pedestrian area perimeter closest to the entrance
  • Alternative: a trip to the Castelli Romani (Frascati, Castel Gandolfo) — an hour by car, a very different landscape from the city

Evening

  • Dinner in the Testaccio, Pigneto or Ostiense neighbourhood — close to San Giovanni, easily reachable
  • Agreed post-Concertone pick-up via WhatsApp: the driver adapts to the real end time of the event

Three concrete reasons for 1 May:

Guaranteed punctuality on the return. The real problem at the Concertone is not the outward journey — it is the return. When the event ends, thousands of people look for transport at exactly the same moment. With a private driver you have an agreed time and a vehicle waiting: no queue, no standing around waiting.

ZTL access without worry. NCC drivers are authorised to enter the limited traffic zones. No risk of an automatic fine, no fruitless driving around looking for a free access point.

Schedule flexibility. 1 May has many variables: Concertone times that shift, unpredictable traffic, uncertain weather. The driver adapts — you can communicate changes via WhatsApp during the day without losing the service.

All rates are fully inclusive: fuel, motorway tolls, parking, ZTL, VAT. No hidden holiday surcharges.

Frequently asked questions

The driver service for 1 May starts from €180 for a full day (up to 8 hours), with a luxury sedan saloon for up to 4 passengers. For larger groups the luxury van is available (up to 7 passengers, from €220). The price is fixed and fully inclusive: fuel, tolls, parking and ZTL access.

1 May is a national public holiday: many bus and tram lines run to reduced or holiday schedules, with frequencies roughly halved compared to weekdays. The metro runs but during peak Concertone hours (afternoon and evening) Manzoni and San Giovanni stations may be closed or access-controlled by police to manage crowds. Getting around by public transport during the Concertone peak is difficult.

No. During the 1 May Concertone, the area around Piazza San Giovanni is progressively closed to private vehicles from the morning. The NCC driver drops you at the nearest permitted perimeter access point and agrees with you a pick-up spot for the end of the evening. No private vehicle can get close to the stage.

1 May is one of the busiest long weekends of the year in Rome. We recommend booking at least 7–10 days in advance to guarantee vehicle availability. For the Concertone evening — where pick-up is agreed to a precise time — it is important to confirm at least 48 hours before.

Yes. In addition to the full day, we offer single transfers: outward or return journey between your address (hotel, Airbnb, home) and the nearest access points to Piazza San Giovanni. Prices start from €55 for the saloon. The evening return is strongly recommended to be booked in advance: availability of taxis and NCC in the 22:00–01:00 window runs out quickly.
